Red Eare Slider Basking Area?
I have a question about my Red Eared Slider Basking Area. I have a nice platform for him to get up and everything and he does go up there sometimes for a short period of time. Don't see him their too often. I recently measured the basking area temperature and it is about 100F - 110F. I am using a Repti Basking Spot Lamp 75W with a Zoomed Mini Deep Dome Lamp Fixture. It is about 10inches away from the basking platform. He is eating fine and is always hungry, his eyes are fully open and he swims pretty good. Water Temp is about 78F. 15 Gallon Aquarium
Any ideas what I am doing wrong or why my basking temperature is too high. I tried to move it a bit hight, but the temperature doesn't really change.
Any ideas how to get this lower or what I am doing wrong? I was told the proper basking temperature is 90F

Unless your turtle is 1 1/2 inches long, then your tank is too small. Rule of thumb is 10 gallons per inch of turtle. This will also affect your basking temps, as the heat has nowhere to distribute and so it gets hotter than it should. Your wattage would be fine, if it was used in a 40+ gallon tank. You don't want to go any farther than 12 inches away from the basking platform, either; any farther and it won't be as effective.
So, in short, get a bigger tank. You'll need it eventually anyway, because when he's an adult you'll need at least a 100 gallon tank. =)
