Pentax K5, The Camera DSLR I Have Been Waiting For
i just got my k-5, in fact it is pretty much exactly what i became looking for. I upgraded from your k20d, in the Pentax K-5 surpasses that excellent camera around every respect.
The AF is so much faster than previous pentax versions. it could still struggle sometimes in suprisingly low light when pointed in low contrast area, but so does virtually any camera ever manufactured. Liveview AF if very quick as well, even faster using the new 1. 02 firmware.
the actual dynamic range is incredible, in addition to equals or beats basically any digital camera approximately this point (and most likely equals the exposure latitude associated with negative film). I can pretty much dispense with multiple exposures for HDR, because i is now able to just expose for the highlights after which bring the shadows upward in photoshop with not many added noise. This is a very revolutionary feature.
High ISO is actually fantastic, getting pretty towards the performance of the best FF cameras in the current generation. It reaches least 2 stops a lot better than my k20d, plus probably closer to 3 after you factor in that you essentially cant make it generate banding noise at virtually any iso, which usually makes the files much simpler to clean up. i will use iso 6400 at A3 size plus it looks great, just a rapid pass with noise ninja or perhaps topaz. The ISO performance of your camera was unimaginable a few years ago when talking regarding aps-c sensors.
The construction is awesome, and it also just feels great inside hand (i have ordinary sized hands). Its very compact for your camera in this elegance (compared to nikon d300s. canon 7d, and many others..), but is very solid feeling due to the magnesium alloy shell plus steel frame. It is fully weather sealed along with very rugged. Try doing more of these with any other photographic camera besides the olympus e-5 [...]. It somehow manages to squeeze a remarkable availablility of manual controls in without having feeling cramped.
Ergonomics is often a particular strong point for Pentax on the whole, and specifically the Pentax k5 may well be the best pentax yet camera within this regard. All the major controls fall easily underneath your fingers, with no need to take your eye away to change aperture, shutter acceleration, iso, metering routine, af manner, etc..the truly great high iso operation makes the pentax TAV function truly useful finally (lets you place aperture and shutter speed, along with changes the iso to get proper exposure within your set auto iso range). more than any other company it looks like the pentax engineers can also be photographers, and also everything is laid out in ways that is logical in addition to well conceived. Also there is a pentax unique hyper plan and hyper manual modes. Hyper program helps you easily switch through your set program mode to help AV or SV function by just turning the control wheel of every. convert the back wheel and you also are in aperture main concern, turn the front and you also are in shutter main concern, make the green button also , you are back to your own program mode. In manual mode you can make your adjustments to shutter as well as aperture, plus the green button will require a meter reading and also make an exposure suggestion for you personally, which often quickly gets you inside the ballpark. it is great.
your shutter/mirror sound is say quite, a very nice vary from the loud thwack connected with my k20d. When my partner and i shoot with my adobe flash, the flashbulb pop is a loudest sound coming from the camera. that Pentax K-5 pairs exceptionally well considering the tiny Limited primes, turning it into possible to have exceptional IQ with small size, yet retaining every one of the control of a professional player camera. Street photographers should you should consider this combo.
Photography kit recommendations? The best DSLR?
Hey guys, I looking into getting a DSLR soon, and was wondering what's the best brand/type out there.
Trawling through ebay and Amazon etc has drained me, and I have also Argos'd it.
Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus, Sony etc etc etc
What's the best one you've worked with? Cost effective? Good quality?
So many questions, so little time 
But I would appreciate any feedback that would help narrow the choice down 
This DSLR will be for Uni, as I will be using it in my Creative Media Production course, in which the first year relies heavily on photography.
My experience would allow me to say I have dabbled with proper cameras, but mainly I have used just a normal, basic model, but have a stable portfolio of creative images I have taken. I want to upgrade to a better quality DSLR after getting used to using my friends' models; I feel that the quality these cameras have is clearly higher than the normal ones I have used. I am getting my head round the jargon.
There are so many ways to answer this question. Every brand has it's fan boys and every brand has it's detractors but in the end all digital cameras do the same thing and in the end you put an enlargement on the table and you wont be able tell which camera took it.
In the search for a good camera I have used a lot of different ones and my search led me to the one that feels right and not so much on all the bells and whistles it has, it suits my style... It's five years old in technology but the ergonomics make it intuitive in use which means I don't spend a lot of time looking for buttons and menus and it delivers the best image for my style, I am never disappointed. I am however ridiculed by my peers whose equipment is new and cost's ten times the amount but in the end doesn't take a better picture... My most important lesson... it's not the camera.
If you are looking for absolute value in a new camera, the Canon T2i is a tough one to beat and rates very high in the reviews especially on image quality. As far as used bodies go the older pro bodies offer superior image quality and superior build. I can highly recommend the Nikon D2x as it can be had for under $1000 U.S. has excellent ergonomics and can survive almost anything you throw at it. The little brother D200 is also a solid value The Canon 1D's are also good but until you get past the Mark II versions the menu system takes two hands to use which means you have to stop in the middle of what your doing to make adjustments. The best used value in Canon is the 40D, very popular for a lot of reasons though still a little pricey for the same reasons.
More important than the camera is the glass you put on the front of it. Stay away from kit lenses especially on the high mega pixel cameras. You will be better off buying the 50mm 1.8 version of any maker than using their kit lenses. Top three affordable and readily available lens makers are Pentax, Nikon and Canon.
