Sigma 10-20 Review

One of the more popular interchangeable lenses on the market right now is the 10-20mm lens made by Sigma.  This Japanese lens product has become a fan favorite due to not only its look and feel but also its price relative to some of its competitors in the interchangeable lens realm.  Sigma lenses can be used not only on Sigma camera models but also top brands such as Nikon and Canon among others.  These lenses come in Telephoto and Wide Angle versions and can be utilized in various settings by all levels of photographers both pro and newbie.  This writeup will focus on the Wide Angle 10-20 mm F4-5.6 EX DC HSM Lens for Nikon mount but surely those seeking reviews on other similar Sigma models with varying apertures and dimensions would benefit from reading this Sigma 10-20mm Review.

Sigma 10-20mm Lens Appearance & Feel

On first glance at the Sigma 10-20, this lens definitely passes the eyeball test in terms of appearance and style.  The modern black rubberized color scheme along with the white numerals and letters will fit any style of camera this lens will be used in conjunctionwith.  The shiny gold ring adds a nice touch to an already professional look, although purists may not particularly like this addition.  It comes with a 2 lens caps (front and rear), a lens hood (nice addon) and a zippered carrying case that is evenly padded unlike other competition lenses.  At a rough weight of 16 oz, most users should be able to hold it for any length of shooting time however those with neck or shoulder issues need to be wary during longer shoots.  The lens is easy to attach and the manual focus and zoom operation is smooth but not too much to lose the feel and action of the lens.  The action is quiet and fast in the manual mode without even powering on.  Overall feel and appearance receives a full 5 out of 5 stars.

Sigma 10-20mm Lens Performance

Once the camera is turned on, you get a much better feel of the Sigma 10-20mm quality.  The lens autofocus is smooth as can be and ultra quiet for a wide angle lens, very important features in the professional photography setting to avoid distraction.  In addition, the HSM autofocus is extremely fast even in dim light conditions and the focusing very precise.   One nice feature is the existence of an internally focusing lens meaning the act of focusing does not turn the manual focus ring.  One thing of note is the focus and zoom directions are the opposite of the Canon lenses so those who are normally Canon lens users will need to adjust to this difference.  All in all, the lens performance gets a 5 out of 5 stars.

Sigma 10-20mm Picture Sharpness

The Sharpness of the photos taken with the Sigma 10-20 is very good and well above standards.  When editing or altering the pictures, this model may not produce pictures quite as sharp as some of the more high end lenses from Nikon. Some of the photos could have been a tad more defined in terms of the human features but considering the large cost differential between this Sigma 10-20 lens and comparable Nikon models, sometimes as much as 50% of the cost, we would recommend going with the Sigma.  Sharpness gets a 4.5 out of 5 stars due to the small amount of sharpness decline at the wide edges of the picture.

Picture Color and Saturation

Because the Sigma 10-20 has a 2 mm wider focal length than that of the Nikon model, the mentality many users make in terms of cropping during editing can be thrown out the window.  The color on all of the pics taken is rich and vibrant without being too rich or deep.  The contrast is also excellent for all picture types and settings, with outside ones being some of the best you can ask for.  We have seen other reviews mentioning cloud and mountain photographs being especially nice with this lens and we could only assume this would be true with its great contrast feature.  Without question the best aspect of this camera is that with this wide-angle lens, you see pictures that you truly didn’t even know were there.  Quite an exciting thought for all camera junkies.  Color and saturation get a solid 5 out of 5 stars.

We hope you get some quality pieces of experience out of our Sigma 10-20 review and can now make the best decision for your camera usage.  This lens can be found for as little as $480, almost half as much as comparable Nikon models, so we would give the thumbs up on a solid purchase value.

is this a good photography studio light kit?

im still new to all this and found a strobe lighting kit on ebay i have a budget of 350 and this one is close by to me. Is this a good kit to start with? And as i get better will i just have to replace this kit because i will outgrow it?

Personally I would not buy it. I find it too weak lighting wise and no idea how to get repair work done on it. Likely to end up in the trash. I have purchased White Lightnings and Alien Bees over the years (all made by Paul C.Buff). I was using one I purchased 24 years ago and it still works fine. I would recommend the highest wattage Alien Bee you can afford and build your lighting over time as money is available. I know how it is to be anxious to do it all at once and on the cheap, but in the end it is unwise.
